🐻 Bears in the Valley: Sharing the Smoky Mountains with Our Wild Neighbors

Black Bear in the wildflower field

Life in the Great Smoky Mountains is full of beauty — from the rolling hills and misty mornings to the symphony of frogs and crickets each evening. But one of the most magical (and humbling) reminders that we live among true wilderness is the frequent appearance of our mountain neighbors — the black bears.

🌿 Living Among Legends

Here at Maple Valley Farm, nestled deep in our lush valley, bear sightings have become a regular and breathtaking part of life. Guests at both the Bear Cub Cabin and Maple Valley Farm House have been lucky enough to catch glimpses of these majestic animals strolling along the tree line, passing near the ponds, or even stopping for a curious sniff of a flower patch.

It’s no wonder they feel at home here - the Smokies are one of the most densely populated black bear habitats in North America, and Maple Valley Farm provides the perfect peaceful environment for them to wander.

We always remind our guests that these moments are a gift - a chance to witness nature in its truest form, right outside your window.

💛 Respecting the Bears

While their presence is part of what makes this land so special, it’s important that both locals and visitors follow a few simple guidelines to keep everyone - humans and bears alike - safe and happy.

Here are some of the farm’s bear safety reminders:

  • Never feed a bear - not intentionally or accidentally. Bears have incredible memories and a strong sense of smell. Even small bits of food left outside can attract them back.

  • Store food and trash securely - whether you’re grilling by the pool or picnicking by the pond, keep all food sealed and dispose of trash in designated bins.

  • Keep your distance - if you see a bear, enjoy the sighting from afar. Use your camera’s zoom instead of your feet!

  • Don’t leave pet food outdoors - Aunt Hill and Puss Puss appreciate this too!

  • Stay calm if you encounter a bear - back away slowly, speak softly, and never run. Most bears are more interested in snacks than people and will move on once they realize you’re not food.

🌸 Beauty and Balance

The bears remind us daily of why we love this valley so much - it’s a place where the wild still feels wild. The same forests that bloom with wildflowers also shelter deer, foxes, owls, and of course, our famous furry friends.

As the sun sets behind the mountains, there’s a comforting thought that nature thrives here - in harmony with the farm, our guests, and our family.

So if you’re visiting Maple Valley Farm and happen to see a black bear, take a deep breath, snap a (zoomed-in!) photo, and savor the moment. You’re standing in one of the few places where mountain life still beats to nature’s true rhythm.
